This colossal investment, estimated to total about US$360 million, is expected to create some 16,000 jobs during development followed by over 3500 positions when operational, providing over 1100 top quality rooms and attracting more than 300,000 tourists a year. The beach front locations are to transform the area on the East side of Rio, creating a world class tourist destination with an emphasis on environmental sustainability and socio-cultural matters. Maraey is also planning the complementary development of approximately 250 new homes, a mix of villas, duplexes and apartments, with a view to creating the most exclusive residential development of first and second homes in South America. It is planned that supporting the hotel and residential projects will be a variety of entertainment and other amenities including shops, restaurants, a spa, pool areas, a gym and fitness centre and a sports club. It is understood that construction of the hotels and associated residential development is expected to start in the near future. In addition, Laelio Baptista Airport, which serves Marica, is being remodelled to accommodate national and international flights.
