1979 Chevron B47 - ex Michael Roe Team Riva Watches Selling on behalf of a client, the ex Michael Roe, David Clark Team Riva Watches 1979 Chevron B47 Formula 3 Car, Chassis Number B47-79-02. Following the untimely death of Chevron founder Derek Bennett in 1978, Tony Southgate was employed as a consulting designer on the companies 1979 Formula 2 & 3 cars to primarily introduce the ground effect concept to the designs. However, owing to the situation at the company, it was necessary to base the cars around the previous years wide monocoque chassis, restricting the width of the winged side pods, and thus their effectiveness. Four B47s were entered for the first round of the British Formula 3 Championship, 3 by Derek McMahon Racing for Stefan Johansson, Bernard Devaney & Eddie Jordan. The 4th car was entered by David Clark, with backing from Riva Watches, for his driver Michael Roe, winner of the 1978 Formula Ford Festival. This is the car offered here. The British F3 season would prove challenging for Chevron's teams, the car proving overweight and lacking in downforce. However, there were a few notable results. Chassis 79-02 is one of only 2 B47s to win a Formula 3 race in 1979. 79-02s notable results in 1979 were: 4th March Silverstone: Qual P3, Race P2 20th May Donington Race of the Year: Race P4 28th May Silverstone: Qual P5, Race P2 3rd June Donington FOCA Trophy: Qual P4, Race P1 Halfway through 1979, despite a B-spec upgrade, the Chevron teams were switching to the more competitive March chassis. Roe would finish the season 9th in the Championship. 79-02 subsequently moved to France and was raced by Patrick Lecompte in French F3 during the 1981 & 82 seasons, and later hillclimbed by Bernard Pourchet. The car was restored in France during 2010, with invoices present, in preparation for the 2012 edition of the Monaco Historic Grand Prix. There, the car finished a highly creditable 20th overall. The car has remained in secure storage since the current vendor purchased it and has not been used. In visually good condition overall, the car is fitted with a correct Toyota 2TG-Novamotor, rebuilt by Accel Moteur of France in 2010 at a cost of €6000 (invoices and a dyno print out are present. The car is fitted with the correct 5-speed Hewland Mk9 transmission. Inboard rocker front suspension and conventional outboard style rear suspension with Koni dampers & AP front & rear brakes. The bodywork is currently presented in later B-specification with full width style nose, as opposed to the earlier winged nose. Currently presented in white and blue, the car would look fantastic presented in the original black Riva Watches livery. Having not been used, it would be necessary to carry out light recommisioning prior to 79-02 being returned to the track, including but not limited to renewal of the fuel cell, harness & extinguisher. A small spares package is included with the sale, including 2 sets of wheels, 2 nosecones, a splitter, windscreen mould and various suspension parts. Car is supplied with various invoices, photocopied Autosport race reports, Monaco 2012 programme & expired.FFSA issued technical passport & logbook. With the advent of "flat-floor" Classic Formula 3 regulations, the B47 offers a chance to race a rarely seen F3 car, and with appropriate development race at the front. This car is a perfect opportunity for the HSCC's Classic F3 series in the UK, Trofeo Novamotor in Europe, FIA Historic Formula 3 Cup and the recently announced F3 Classic Interseries with races in France and the UK including a grid at the prestigious Classic meeting at Silverstone. POA, viewing is welcome by appointment. Any questions please ask and I will try to answer. Keyword Search Terms: Chevron, F3, Formula
