Great potential for investment project with good access and near Vialonga, Sobralinho, Alhandra and near the banks of the Tagus River. The toponym Alverca appears in the medieval period, it is a word that derives from the Arabic «Albirca» or «Alborca» meaning flooded land, the most striking geographical characteristic in the village. In the Middle Ages, Alverca is village and county, characterized by the existence of homeages, farms and couples within their limits. In 1354 it is given to the Chapels of D. Afonso IV. In the reign of D. Pedro I, in 1357, the first Letter of Confirmation of the Municipality of Alverca appeared. The Tagus was important in the development of the village, namely the location of three ports, at the mouth of the same number of stinters, through which the communication of people and goods was made. Local agricultural production was based on the cultivation of cereals (wheat, barley, corn), orchards (orange), vineyards and olive trees, setting in motion 12 watermills, 30 wine mills and 12 olive oil mills. The olive tree throughout the region was one of the trees of enormous importance. In 1782 two Standards are built, to mark the term of the city of Lisbon - located on the edge of the Alfarrobeira stream, in Verdelha already in the Parish of Forte da Casa, which refer that the Estrada Real, in the section between Lisbon and these standards, was lit by olive trees, whose olive oil was intended for public lighting of the city of Lisbon. In 1795, in the reign of D. Maria I was created the place of Juiz de Fora in Alverca. Until that date the municipality of Alverca was managed by an Ordinary Judge, elected among the 'largest' of the land. The 19th century for Alverca was a time of change. It is in this century that some very important facts are given that in the long run, the nature of the village would change. The population in the year 1801 is 1642 inhabitants. On October 24,1855, the Municipality of Alverca was extinguished, becoming part of Vila Franca de Xira. The following year, on October 28,1856, Alverca was one of the pioneer localities to be served by the railways, when D. Pedro V inaugurated the first railway line from Santa Apolonia to Carregado, passing through Xabregas, Olivais, Povoa, Alverca, Vila Franca de Xira and Castanheira. Alverca, in 1886 has the first street lighting. It was oil, with lanterns attached to the walls by an iron console. In 1892, in Quinta da Figueira, a 'Textile Factory' was inaugurated, the first major manufacturing unit in Alverca, employing 74 workers. One of the characteristics of Alverca is its connection to the History of Portuguese Aviation, being considered as the birthplace of aviation in Portugal. There was installed in 1919 the military airfield and the General Workshops of Aeronautical Material. It was also in Alverca that the first Portuguese international airport, called the International Landing Camp, served Lisbon until the inauguration of Portela Airport in 1940. * County: Lisboa * Town: Vila Franca de Xira * Parish: Vila Franca de Xira * Location: Alverca REF: AV-PBI-1254 Location: Alverca Area: 7979 m2 | 3363945.12 m2 Status: For Refurbishment
