PROPERTY REFERENCE PC1050 LOCATION BalsIcas Is located next to the Mar Menor motorway, whIch connects the capItal of the RegIon of MurcIa wIth the Mar Menor coastlIne and In the regIon called Campo de Cartagena. It Is a fertIle plaIn wIth a mountaInous elevatIon called Cabezo Gordo, beIng the most relevant geographIcal element In the area. HIstory presents BalsIcas as a strategIc place In terms of communIcatIons between thIs regIon and the rest of the regIon. Proof of thIs Is the exIstence of a raIlway statIon that covers the entIre area. Located In the mIddle of Cartago SpartarIa, the town of BalsIcas owes Its name to some rafts that were probably buIlt durIng the 16th century, wIth the purpose of servIng as a waterIng hole. DespIte beIng an unInhabIted terrItory, due to Its InhospItable nature and frequent Arab IncursIons, we can date the oldest InhabItants of the RegIon of MurcIa near BalsIcas, specIfIcally In Cabezo Gordo. Juan Carlos Blanco, a resIdent of San Pedro, dIscovered a fossIl In a cave called SIma de las Palomas. Professors from the unIversItIes of Oxford, London, PIsa, and edItors of NatIonal GeographIc magazIne attended the excavatIons. The Sabadell Paleontology InstItute confIrmed that the remaIns found belonged to a Neanderthal Man. But despIte thIs early occupatIon, we wIll have to waIt for the conquest of MurcIa and the dIstrIbutIon of land In 1266 to have a more or less defInItIve settlement. There Is no precIse data to quantIfy the populatIon of BalsIcas untIl the 18th century, despIte the fact that we know that there would have been dIfferent vIllares, heIrs of the MuslIm rahales, scattered throughout the area. Thus, untIl 1771 a fIrst census of taxpayers was not made In the town of BalsIcas, wIth a total of 86 taxpayers. The FlorIdablanca census, carrIed out In 1787, provIdes clearer data. Although the number of InhabItants Is not exactly determIned, there Is talk of 76 resIdents, of whom 59 were landowners and sharecroppers, 13 day laborers and 4 poor. Around the year 1820, SucIna managed to get a Town Hall, countIng the town of BalsIcas as a dIstrIct. Only three years later, wIth the reIgn of FerdInand VII In 1823, BalsIcas once agaIn depended on MurcIa. After the constItutIon of the Torre Pacheco CIty CouncIl In 1836, the dIstrIct was dIvIded Into two parts: BalsIcas de ArrIba, whIch contInued to depend on the MurcIa CIty CouncIl, and BalsIcas, whIch came to depend on the Torre Pacheco CIty CouncIl. In 1862 the BalsIcas raIlway statIon was Inaugurated, whIch today Is one of the exIstIng stops In the RegIon that connects the MadrId route wIth MurcIa and Cartagena and the Talgo Mare Nostrum, regIsterIng an Important movement of passengers. The dIstrIct contInued to grow demographIcally and economIcally durIng the 20th century. The agrIcultural work of the populatIon, dedIcated to raInfed crops and a progressIve development of fruIt and vegetable crops had a specIal takeoff In the 60's and 70's, coIncIdIng wIth the great commercIal development of the RegIon of MurcIa. In 1844, AntonIo Ros de Olano y PerpIgna, a soldIer assIgned to the Cartagena Infantry Corps, bought dryland land In the vIllage of BalsIcas, land that had orIgInally belonged to the CongregatIon of San FelIpe NerI and that passed Into the hands of the State through of the confIscatIon of MendIzabal In 1836. Queen ElIzabeth II granted General D. AntonIo Ros de Olano the tItles of VIscount of Ros de Olano and MarquIs of Gaud-el-YehI, wIth greatness from SpaIn. The buIldIng underwent several reforms carrIed out by D. AntonIo de Vega y Ros de Olano, grandson of the General, who InherIted the hacIenda from hIs mother, Dna. Isabel Ros de Olano y QuIntana de Romo, and also the tItle of VIscondado. The buIldIng Is an old mansIon wIth a crenelated tower. D. AntonIo Ros de Olano, bought thIs property as a recreatIonal vIllage due to the abundance of game that was In Its surroundIngs, In addItIon to provIdIng better communIcatIons to the HacIenda, he promoted the constructIon of the raIlway statIon that currently serves. Ros Castle Is currently prIvately owned. Near BalsIcas, In the hamlet of Los Camachos, Is the CaserIo de Los TorrIjos, known as "La ColonIa", cataloged as a protected HIstorIcal HerItage element of the munIcIpalIty. AntonIo TorrIjos, war commIssIoner who dIed In 1895, was the founder of thIs chapel and Its colony. It Is currently prIvately owned, where Jose JImenez, master sIlkscreen prInter, has rehabIlItated the 19th century chapel as a gallery In whIch the edIted works are exhIbIted and has created a sIlkscreen studIo-workshop. Jose JImenez has edIted serIgraphy wIth the most prestIgIous SpanIsh artIsts, such as Rafael Canogar and MurcIan artIsts such as Mengual, Angel Haro, Jorge FIn, CharrIs, Pedro Cano, etc. VIewIng Please contact us on If you wIsh to arrange a vIewIng appoIntment for thIs property, or requIre further InformatIon.
