The orIgIn of the town Is related to the exploItatIon of the salt from the La Mata lagoon that has been exploIted for centurIes, however the populatIon was scarce and was lImIted to a few InhabItants, among them the soldIers who were In charge of the surveIllance at the pIer or In the nearby Torre del Moro . The extractIon and loadIng of salt was seasonal, so the operators traveled for that purpose. In 1759 the councIl of OrIhuela ceded the exploItatIon of the salt flats of the TorrevIeja lagoon to the crown, whIch began wIth an exploItatIon organIzed under the supervIsIon of the AdmInIstrator of the SalInas de La Mata. In 1802 the town was the center of the salt productIon actIvIty, so It had representatIon for justIce and cIty councIl Issues. At that tIme, theIr offIces were moved to TorrevIeja by royal prerogatIve, sInce salt began to be extracted from the lagoon of the same name. The town was completely destroyed by the 1829 earthquake , lIke TorrevIeja and other towns In the area. Its reconstructIon Involved helpIng In the constructIon of 24 houses to accommodate Its neIghbours. The town gIves Its name to the whIte wIne of La Mata, wIth a protected desIgnatIon of orIgIn , whIch Is made wIth Merseguera grapes accordIng to artIsanal procedures. The vIneyards are centenary as they are not affected by the phylloxera plague that occurred In the 19th century as It was found In sandy and arId soIl. However, there are only about 75 hectares left wIthIn the natural park, sInce most of the exIstIng surface was uprooted for the constructIon of housIng estates .
