Property is neat, 1/1. HOW TO GET TO THE ISLAND OF MLJET The nearest airport is in Dubrovnik. It is a little over an hour's drive from Prapratno on the Peljesac peninsula, from where ferries leave for Sobra on Mljet several times a day throughout the year. The ferry ride from Prapratno to Sobra on Mljet takes 45 minutes. You can also go directly to Mljet by fast catamaran (ride takes one hour and 20 minutes) departing from Dubrovnik (Gruž port), which is half an hour's drive from the airport. Mljet can also be reached by catamaran or ferry from Split. The catamaran runs on the route Split - Brac - Hvar - Korcula - Mljet - Dubrovnik, and the trip lasts 3 hours. INFORMATION ABOUT THE ISLAND The island of Mljet is a mystical oasis unique in many respects, and it is precisely because of its charismatic attributes that sailors who are looking for pristine natural beauty like to visit it. The American business magazine Forbes included it in the list of five idyllic Mediterranean islands perfect for escaping the crowds and mass tourism. Secluded and untouched, the island of mysticism, olive trees, vines and rich forests is ideal for exploring the rich flora and fauna and for peaceful enjoyment of the beauty of untouched nature. It is mentioned as far back as the fourth century BC in Greek writings, and numerous finds of Greek amphorae and sunken ships along the shores of Mljet testify that Greek sailors stayed on the shores of Mljet during the journey. NATIONAL PARK The island of Mljet, on which the southernmost Croatian national park is located, is a real treasure of natural beauty, historical heritage, tradition and opportunities for an active vacation. Mljet National Park is the oldest protected area in the entire Mediterranean, it received this status back in 1960. The geomorphological phenomenon of salt lakes divided by stone bridges is one of the recognizable symbols of the island. The large and small lakes are made of seawater that flows into them through a salt channel and are ideal for swimming because of the pleasant temperature. The lakes are surrounded by walkways, hiking and biking trails, and divers like to explore the undersea where colonies of peat coral are hidden. On the small island of St. Mary, which is located on the Great Lake, there is a Benedictine monastery with the church of St. Marije, built 1,000 years ago (around 1177), and solar boats regularly sail to the islet in the summer season. MYTHOLOGY Numerous legends are associated with the island of Mljet, and the most famous is certainly the one about Odysseus. A cave on the south coast of the island also bears Odysseus' name. Due to the white stone and the reflection of the sun, the sea in and around the cave takes on a magical blue color, and the location itself is suitable for swimming and is a favorite among adventurers who like to jump from the rocks that surround it. Homer's epic Odyssey says that 3,000 years ago, the ancient Greek hero Odysseus was cast by the sea after a shipwreck on the enchanted island of Ogygia, which was the kingdom of the beautiful fairy Calypso, daughter of the god Atlante. On her marvelous island, Calypso, the goddess of beauty, silence and peace, kept Odysseus, whom she fell in love with, in a cave for seven years, until she freed him on the direct order of Zeus. There, the great and wise warrior succumbed to the charms of the irresistible goddess and the beauty of her island. From that mythical relationship, Odysseus and Calypso got twin sons: Nausinoes and Nausitos. Numerous experts are convinced that the island of Ogygia from Homer's Odyssey is today's Mljet. The description fits: green forests, four sources of drinking water that never dry up. Apart from the myth of Homer's Odysseus, Mljet is also known for the stories about the shipwreck of St. Paul the Apostle in the year 61, to the Romans and Illyrians. GASTRONOMY Since ancient times, Mljet has been known for its superb gastronomy, which was brought with them by the Romans, and after them it was nurtured by the abbots on the island of St. Marije, and today it is presented to their guests by island restaurants, guesthouses and taverns. The Teža menu was also delicious, primarily due to the abundance of quality fish, shellfish and other seafood. As fish was always abundant, various methods of its conservation were developed. So, in addition to fresh fish prepared in traditional ways, you can also taste specialties based on salted, smoked or fish preserved in gallatin or olive oil.
