The historical Tobey - Vanderpoel - Pruyn House Built in 1810, and located directly across the street from the Columbia County Historical Society's House of History - aka - the James Vanderpoel House, this Queen Anne style townhome boasts perfect proportions, high ceilings, decorative corbels, unusual lattice work, sliding parlor doors, 6 fireplaces, tall windows, a separate guest suite, curved walls and a grand center hall. These details and more make this fashionable and historical home a large and colorful canvas for your designer, architect and carpenter. The wide grand center hall runs from the front door to the back, with matching doors and lights and a bath discretely behind-but not under-the staircase. The double (front and back) parlor are sun filled and elegant, with pocket doors and fireplaces. On the other side of the hall, you will find separate dining and serving areas with enough room to expand the adjacent small kitchen into something worthy of a top chef. The 2nd floor boasts a guest suite with separate bath, a good-sized bedroom and closet as well as 2 small rooms that could be converted into a home office and a pantry/laundry room. In the center of the 2nd floor lies a large bathroom, with a back entrance to a king-sized bedroom (also with fireplace). At the front of the 2nd floor there is a large grand room, could be an upstairs parlor or extra-large bedroom and a large pantry room that could also be a home office. Relax on the covered rear porch and gaze out at the garden, with tall flowers, low ground cover and twisted trees make for an 'Alice in Wonderland' stroll with no end in sight. Built by the prestigious Kinderhook Vanderpoel family for one of many children, it was later inhabited by the Hon. Wm. H. Tobey, a local judge and politician that later became the President of the Kinderhook Bank (still in existance). Like the Vanderpoels, Tobey was amoung the many influential families that shaped NY and the rest of the still fledgling United States. Most famous of the Kinderhook families was that of Martin Van Buren, the 8th President of the United States who was born and retired there after leaving the White House. Kinderhook today has a strong community with galleries, restaurants, shops and community activities like the Farmers Market, 5K Runs, Kinderhook Library Events, Old Kinderhook Winter Walk as well as historical events hosted by the Columbia County Historical Society. Surrounded and imbedded with the agricultural community of Columbia County, more local businesses are planned for the near future in the picturesque Kinderhook Village Square. Ref: 36508-22399674
