Archeology has led to the conclusion that the region has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Silves most likely had its origins in an important Phoenician trading post from the 1st millennium BC, called Cilpes, which was about two kilometers from the current city. There are also traces of the Roman occupation in the urban core of the city. The Muslim occupation was the one that exerted the greatest influence on the territory, having been present since the 8th and 13th centuries.
