Subsequently promoted and becoming an Equerry to the Queen. Being a cavalry man he paid particular attention to the standard of the stables and the other facilities which largely remain in their original form. Members of the Marter family continued to live in the house until 1964. Much of the house is early Georgian and indeed some of the structure predated the Spanish Armada, a dwelling having occupied the site since 1160.
