What you will be doing: We are currently seeking a mechanical technician to work at our strategic pumping station across South London. Your role will be to ensure that all equipment at our waste treatment works is running safely and efficiently using proactive and reactive maintenance methods. You will need to inspect, maintain, fault diagnose, test, install, modify or repair as appropriate mechanical plant equipment, alongside supporting operating the plant. Our Technicians are a vital component in what we do at Thames Water. They are key figures on any site and help with the day to day operating of our sites. Each day can present its own challenges and you will work towards achieving the highest equipment efficiencies through routine maintenance, breakdown repair and improvement work. Working within the team you will follow a robust maintenance plan as well as get involved in installation projects, mechanical fault finding, project commissioning and emergency breakdown repairs to ensure our plant operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Day to day duties will include: * Investigating plant failures and carrying out repairs as quickly and efficiently as possible in order to avoid interruptions to the process. This may involve investigating and diagnosing complex faults and carrying out repairs during incidents. * Carrying out scheduled planned maintenance work on mechanical equipment in compliance with company standards and procedures. * Providing technical advice to the wider team, making reference to up to date technical knowledge, and provide training or support for technical trainees if required. * Maintaining technical equipment such as various pumps and associated control gear, automatic valves and penstocks, flow, level and pressure measurement, pipework, chemical handling and dosing equipment. To be successful you will have the following skills and experience: * You should be a time-served apprentice with the significant experience in mechanical systems, with NVQ or C&G level 3 in mechanical engineering with an upskill qualification in mechanical NVQ2/3. Ideally, you will have been upskilled with a mechanical qualification to allow inspecting, maintaining, fault diagnosing, testing, installation, modifying, or repairing mechanical plant equipment in a safe and efficient manner * Experience working on large industrial plant equipment including various pumps within the utilities industry would be beneficial. Would suit mechanical maintenance/service engineer or mechanic from any industry. * Knowledge and awareness of workplace health and safety is crucial. * The work will require physical fitness, as you may be required to work in confined spaces on successful completion of the appropriate training. * Participation in a 24/7 out of hours’ standby rota will be required after a suitable period of training and assessment for which you will receive additional payment. * A valid driving licence is essential and all necessary equipment such as vehicle and tools are provided. We’re looking for you to be: * A self-motivated individual that can immerse themselves into the team around them, you need to be very disciplined and have the desire to learn from those around you, and have a can-do attitude. This role can be demanding at times but very rewarding too * Take Ownership of responding quickly to faults, being curious to fully understand the problem, and identifying the best solution to resolve it the first time * Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, to interact with the team * Deliver exceptional service through an enthusiastic and positive approach, taking accountability for your role while working accurately and flexibly within a busy team * Teamwork – We are one team and our end goals are the same * Proactive – take the lead on recommendations and improvements around the site and communicate effectively What’s in it for you You will gain a wealth of exposure to the wider business in the largest Water and Wastewater Company in the UK.
