The “Mulino delle Pile” is best known as “Mulino Bianco”. In the ’90’s it was the setting of a famous TV commercial directed by Giuseppe Tornatore with music composed by Ennio Morricone. An image of the Mulino Bianco is used on every marketing product for the homonym snack brand. All of this makes the Mulino a pilgrimage location for many people looking for a picture. Nowadays, it’s an agriturismo, with 10 bedrooms plus a restaurant and swimming pool. A total 11,840 sqft divided between two structures, in an 18 acres lot in the Tuscan countryside. The tower, ancient nucleus of the mill, is a relaxing lounge with a library featuring ancient volumes in different languages. The irrigation of the 215,278 sqft garden is facilitated by the proximity of the Merse river, which surrounds two thirds of the property. Tranquility and privacy are abundant in this estate, though its just a 40 minute drive to Siena. To add an aura of mysticism, not too far from the Mulino, we have St. Galgano’s Abbey, where The Sword in the Stone, of the King Arthur’s legend, can be found. The construction date of the Mulino is unknown. Historians think it could date from the beginning of the 1200s, built by monks from the near Serena’s Abbey. As shown by an ancient paper from the sixteenth century, it has been owned by the Chiusdino municipality. During that period it was fundamental to mill grain for the local population. The mill remained active until the 1700s, after that there were some structural changes in order to maintain the mill activities, until the 1900s. Mid-1800s the mill was in full activity. The local farmers gathered there in their free time as well. One of the many guests included the marquises that founded the town of Luriano, because they were raising horses there. From 1990s to 1995s the Mulino was on top of the World, being the TV ad protagonist. At the moment, there are still musical instruments belonging to the music legend Ennio Morricone at the property.
