He was born here in the early 16th century. Turgut Reis raised from humble origins to command the Ottoman navy, conquered Corsica and returned to Istanbul with a great number of prisoners. In 1595, during an attempt to take Malta, he was killed. Near Turgutreis Town there is a statue of him. This resort is a new, middlemarket resort, popular with British and French tourists, families and middle-aged couples. In the centre there are small bars, cafes and hotels. People are friendly and helpful, and the sunset is spectacular. A few miles outside town are ruins of the walled city, ancient fountains and graveyards of the Myndos civilisation.
