One of only three TVR Grantura MKIII factory lightweights built, 'XPG 1' is also the only TVR to score World Sports Car Championship points during the 1960s. Built in late 1963, by early 1964 'XPG 1' was already being raced nationally by Paddy Gaston, which is where it received its original 'PG 1' (Paddy Gaston) on the nose. Gaston would race the car extensively, including all over the UK and Europe (Nürburgring 1000km, Spa 500km). At these European events, the lightweight TVR would carry the road registration of 'APH223B' - this was to allow 'freer movement' of the car across boarders as it was simply borrowed from a standard road car he also owned. Gaston sold the car to fellow racer John Wingfield for the 1965 season, who placed an 'X' in front of the 'PG 1' to create the 'XPG 1' that the car has worn for the rest of its racing life. Wingfield would race the car internationally during 1965 and '66, including an impressive 3rd in class at the 1965 International Spa 500kms. During Wingfield's ownership the lightweight TVR would also take in some of the great circuits in the UK and Europe, including Goodwood, Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Oulton Park and Nürburgring. The car was then sold to Rod Longton who won several national championship races up until 1970. After 1970 the car had a long and successful career in Modified Sports car, racing up until 1981, after which it was converted back to its factory lightweight specification. Through the 1980’s, 90’s and early 2000’s the car was competing across Europe with great success, and in its current ownership, 'XPG 1' has returned to glorious Goodwood for both the Revival and Members' Meetings. An extremely well sorted car, with a recently rebuilt 1840cc MGB engine, 'XPG 1' is eligible for all the great historic events, including Goodwood and Le Mans Classic. It is also a fantastic and potentially race-winning entry for the hugely popular and well-mannered Equipe GTS series.
