The new parish united the old parishes of Alvalade, Campo Grande and São João de Brito and its history inevitably dates back to the past of these three territories. Alvalade was, until the mid-twentieth century, essentially formed by fields, farms and vegetable gardens, used for the summer moments of the nobility and, later, as a recreational space and sport of the population. Here were some of the most important events of the city's life, such as the cattle fair and the Battle of Flowers, which took place in Campo Grande. He was born as a parish in 1852, joining the Municipality of Lisbon in 1885. Associated with the development of the city, it is divided in 1959, giving rise to the parishes of Campo Grande, Alvalade and São João de Brito. In the 30's of the 20th century the parish knows its period of greatest development, with major architectural projects integrated in the Urbanization Plan of the South Zone of Avenida Alferes Malheiro, of which we can highlight the Avenue of Rome, the Stakes District, the Neighborhood of São Miguel, the Towers of the Avenue of the United States of America and, already in the 40's, the construction of the Alvalade Neighborhood. In the 1970s, several metro stations of the green line were inaugurated, one of the main means of transport in the city. Alvalade was considered a symbol of modern Lisbon. In the 1980s, a new construction wave emerged, with several buildings erected in the University City, such as the Tombo Tower and new colleges. The beginning of the 21st century brings the requalification of the public space, with interventions in existing spaces, such as the Campo Grande garden and Quinta do Narigão, and the creation of new infrastructure, such as bike paths, the canine park and the adventure park.
