The atmosphere of Matha is typically French, especially on market days when the stall holders arrive. This is the time to get out of bed early to find the best and freshest of the local produce. Maybe some oysters, a bottle of Cognac or Pineau. For a wider selection there are excellent shops in St Jean d'Angely and Cognac (both about 20kms) and in Saintes (45kms). It is very simple to get to Matha from the UK. The area is served by 2 airports, La Rochelle and Poitiers. Budget airlines fly to both these destinations direct from the UK. Rail travel is also possible with TGV stations at Angouleme and Poitiers. The best car ferry route is Portsmouth/St Malo followed by a drive south of about 41/2 hours.
