This Luxurious VILLA, over time, has had various names, all linked to those of the owners: Villa Lieven, villa Moliterno or Antonietta, villa Pagliari, villa Petrella. The Villa is located on the Quisisana hill, halfway between Naples and Sorrento, at the foot of Mount Faito and overlooks the Gulf of Naples. This happy natural position corresponds to an equally happy road position: directly on the panoramic road to Sorrento and at the exit of the motorway link road which avoids the crossing of city traffic, thus connecting it immediately to the important tourist port Marina di Stabia. From the villa you can easily reach the most famous places in the world: Sorrento, Positano, the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii which is only a few kilometers away. The Stabian Baths and the archaeological area are less than a kilometer away. The Quisisana area has historically been home to noble houses and villas: Giuseppe Bonaparte, Carolina Bonaparte exiled by Murat, Christian Fréderic of Denmark, Count Gustav Stackelberg, Lord Blessington. Many writers such as Walter Scott, C. Dickens, de Lamartine, Gustav Flaubert, Alexandre Dumas, the American Herman Melville and many others who in undertaking the Grand tour had, as a stop, Castellammare with its famous thermal waters (28 springs) . His Highness Prince Don Alexander of Lieven, Russian plenipotentiary minister (ambassador) in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, under Ferdinand II of Bourbon, former ambassador to London (1812-1835), in the summer he used to attend the Royal Palace of QUISISANA, a bit like everyone else diplomats accredited to the Bourbon Court. Over time, he must have liked the places particularly so much that he pushed him to build his own villa there (1835-40). The planimetric arrangement was made by Arch. Cav. D. Guglielmo Becchi, Secretary of the Royal Institute of Fine Arts, who at the same time also supervised the works of Villa Pignatelli in Naples, now a museum. Many prominent personalities stayed in this VILLA, including the Russian painter Silvestr Feodosievic SCEDRIN (1819-20), founder of the Russian realistic school, his Stabiae landscapes are present at the Tretiakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. In October 1845, the Russian imperial family had left the harsh climate of Petersburg behind for the milder Palermo, where Ferdinand III awaited them as guests. In addition to political reasons, Tsar Nicholas I was worried about the health of the Tsarina, his wife, so he hoped that the change of air would benefit her. The Tsarina and the Grand Duchess Olga her daughter, the Grand Duchess Mecklembourg and her daughter Luisa embarked with a large number of followed on the frigates Bessarabia and Kamtschatka, the same morning (March 17, 1846) in which the two frigates entered the port of Naples and the Grand Duke Constantine, brother of the Tsar, also arrived with the steamship Castore. On April 16, 1846 the Tsarina Alessandra Feodorowna and all her entourage arrived by train in Castellammare and the Mayor agreed that the Primo Saporivo road should be scattered with sand to allow the imperial carriage to reach the villa of Quisisana. After a few years the Prince of Lieven had to return to his homeland due to the normal rotation of the Russian ambassadors in the Kingdom, therefore, on 24 December 1868, he alienated "... the Prince and Princess of Moliterno, Giuseppe Gallone and Antonietta Melodia, the Villa ... for the sum of one hundred thousand lire ”Princess Antonietta Melodia was the Lady of the Palace of Queen Margherita of Savoy and, therefore, continually received high-level characters. Suffice it to say that the hereditary prince UMBERTO di Savoia, before ascending the throne of Italy with the name of UMBERTO I, had already been three times, together with his betrothed Margherita (future Queen Margherita), a memorable guest in the Villa Moliterno , according to the chronicles, it was the feast given in this villa on March 28, 1870 for the arrival of the two princes (annex - n ° 1) "... from the station to the Moliterno house there was a large crowd ... at Villa Antonietta everything was arranged with taste exquisite ... ..after breakfast served lavishly under a specially built pavilion, the dances took place on the lawn and continued until almost seven in the rooms on the ground floor of the villa ... in memory of the day a pine was planted. (still exists today) and will bring the name of Princess Margherita ... ... the young maestro Francesco Paolo Tosti (later Margherita's singing teacher) sang a romance expressly created by maestro Luigi Denza who accompanied him on the piano (still owned today) ... " Attendees of the best salons in Europe, artists, painters and poets animated the parties in the Villa dei Principi in Moliterno, not least the one in which the Vesuvius funicular was inaugurated, for the occasion (September 1880), Denza composed on the piano on the words of Peppino Turco the famous “Funiculì, funiculà”. !!!! Giovanbattista Gallone (founder of the Stabiani rowing club), son of Giuseppe, inherited the villa which he transformed into a renowned and elegant hotel, the first with electricity in every room, Hotel du Parc first and Villa dei Cedri later. Between 1918-20 the Villa was bought by Comm. G. Somma, then by Comm. R. Garzia who in 1932 sold to the Pagliari family. In 1976 it was bought by Mr. Petrella, is currently inhabited by the heirs. The villa also entered literature by the famous Armenian poetess Vittoria Aganoor Pompilj who described it in one of her compositions. (attachment - n ° 2) The poetess in fact loved to spend long periods of rest in the quiet of QUISISANA. (attachments nos. 3 and 4) A curiosity: the famous Neapolitan song "Palomma 'e notte" by Salvatore di Giacomo, is the faithful translation into Neapolitan of a poem in the Venetian dialect of Aganoor entitled "la Pavegia", on the other hand the Poetess had also copied ... translating, in the Venetian dialect, a song by L. Denza “Butterfly of Sera” 1887, translated then in English with the title "The Moth and the Flame" from Mombray Marras. Well! The holidays also served this purpose. Last but certainly not least, the visit, in May 1998, of the Consul General of the United States to Naples Marianne Myles who, knowing the history of the Villa, expressly asked to be able to visit the historic residence on the occasion of an official visit. in Castellammare. Dr. Myles after the visit to the Baths (annex - nos. 5 and 6), was hosted, with her entourage and the city authorities, in the residence that she meticulously wanted to visit and for which she felt she had to officially thank for the cordial and elegant welcome by the Petrella family.
